An exhibition dedicated to the ninetieth birthday of Zdeněk Sýkora introduces him primarily as a painter, who has devoted himself systematically to investigating the language of the fine arts for more than fifty years now. In a representative selection there are program structural works of the sixties next to later linear paintings, based on the principle of randomness.  zde
The installation of the works from prestigious foreign as well as domestic collections shows his lifelong work as a compact whole that always directly expresses the same without regard to presently used system or graphic method - the astonishment of the painter over the nature and the joy of life.

Contrary to the retrospective show of his work that took place in the Municipal Library in the year 1995, this exhibition is more oriented on some basic topics and clarification of key ideas as for example structure, system or chance. An original concept of these principles is the reason why is the work of Zdeněk Sýkora a permanent part of the rational stream of world arts already since the sixties.

The Municipal Library on the square Mariánské was built in 1925-1928 according to the plans of architect František Roith, a student of professor Otto Wagner at the Vienna Academy. The building was conceived as a cultural institution with extensive possibilities of use including exhibition, lecture and concert halls.

In the building's eastern wing there is the official flat of the Prague Mayor, furnished in Art Deco style. The building architecture works from a rationalistically contained layout plan and from simple volume planning. Above the main entrance and balcony balustrade there are allegorical statues from Ladislav Kofránek.
The building facade is covered with travertine, which is used along with brass and artificial stone in interior decoration as well. The author of the ornamental geometric decoration in the central hall ceiling is František Kysela.

The Gallery acquired the extensive exhibition space on the 2nd floor in 1992. After their restoration, the GHMP has been organizing representative exhibitions here. As a part of the adaptation there was also implementation of new artistic entrance into the Gallery from the street Valentinská. Architect Vlado Milunič designed the entrance in 1996.
