Celebrate Prague Zoo’s anniversary

The 28th of September is the Day of Czech Statehood. In Prague Zoo, this day is traditionally dedicated to the zoo's anniversary. The reopening of the Hippopotamus Pavilion and the introduction of the male hippoTchéco will be the highlights of this year's celebration. However, in order to maintain social distancing and prevent large numbers of visitors indoors, this part of the event will be broadcasted on ČT24 in the morning and visitors will be able to visit the Hippo Pavilion over the course of the afternoon.

A modified programme of the celebrations will offer visitors a review of the season and the launch of the photo competition ‘Fotím v Zoo Praha’ at 1pm. Visitors will be able to admire the photographs and vote for their favourite near the Education Centre at the bottom of the zoo.

Hippo lovers will be able to watch regular live updates of the zoo’s anniversary on Studio 6 on ČT24 on Monday the 28th from 8am to 12pm. “Although we cannot fully enjoy the zoo’s anniversary together this year, we want to show visitors as much as possible. We will show visitors what’s going on behind the scene, give interviews with experts and, of course, we will introduce our new hippopotamus, Tchéco,” Miroslav Bobek, the zoo’s director, says.

Tchéco arrived at Prague Zoo in November last year from the French safari Plaisance-du-Touch. French breeders called him Tchéco in honour of the Czech national holiday, as the hippo was born on the 28th of October. This year, Tchéco will be four years old. Tchéco is currently separated from Maruška and Fanda, the other two hippos in the exhibition.

The launch of the zoo director Miroslav Bobek’s book ‘Supi v hotelu Continental’ at the U Supa refreshment bar will conclude the event.
