The 20th Summer Festivities of Early Music – a highlight of the music season in Prague

The 20th Anniversary of the Summer Festivities of Early Music has started! The first of seven exclusive evenings of music took place on the 11th of July and the international music festival will run until the 6th of August. The well-known festival has been connecting old music with architecture for 20 years, as the concerts take place at specially selected historical venues in the Czech capital city, such as the Convent of Saint Agnes, Břevnov Monastery, Troja Château, and Rudolfinum.

Once again, top artists from both the Czech Republic and abroad have accepted invitations to take part in the festival. There is a broad thematic range of programmes for each evening. However, an interesting feature of this year's festival is that there is no main theme connecting all concerts, as was the case in previous years. Thus, each concert will have a different theme.

Festival programme

The festival programme will offer concerts such as ‘Corazón Español’, a taste of four centuries of Spanish music; beautiful Marian motets by masters of Renaissance polyphony in ‘Rosa Mystica’; music from 18th century Parisian salons, ‘In the Gardens of Muses’; and ‘Due Virtuosi’, a concert of masterpieces for viola da gamba and lute; as well as many more.

Baroque dance

Another evening worth your attention is ‘Coffee Ballet’, a humorous dance performance with music by J. S. Bach. Have you ever seen a coffee pot, a sugar bowl and coffee beans dance?  In “Coffee Ballet”, a complete coffee service comes alive. The Polish ballet ensemble Cracovia Danza will dance in costumes in the style of Meissen china. They will be accompanied by ensemble Collegium Marianum, directed by the excellent flutist Jana Semerádová.

The festival will bring together top artists, amazing performances, beautiful concert venues and interesting themes. In short, Summer Festivities of Early Music will once again be an exceptional event.
