Women will compete for the European Cup in Judo
In the Arena Sparta Podvinný Mlýn in Vysočany in Prague, after two years, women will compete again in Judo for points to qualify for the Olympics at the European Open. The tournament is organised by the Czech Judo Union (Český svaz juda) and will take place on the 2nd of March 2019.
Judo is a style of martial arts originating in Tokyo in Japan. It is a widespread sport which is practiced by thousands of people around the world. The word ‘judo’ in Japanese, surprisingly, means ‘gentle way’. It brings satisfaction to those partaking and the audience. Even though judo is mostly a youth sport, it is suitable for people of all ages, regardless of their height and weight.
Self-defence
The founder of Judo is Professor Jigoro Kano (1860-1938), who created it from selected moves from the older martial art Jiu-Jitsu. The art of Jiu-Jitsu is widespread throughout the world in various forms as a way of self-defence without weapons or with a small weapon. Self-defence has been used for a long time as a way to win real fighting situations in hand to hand combat. If a fighter loses a weapon in the fight, they have to fight for their life. A successful execution of the defensive techniques would then end with the death of the attacker or his destructive damage, for example fracture or bone dislocation.
Aim of Judo
Jigoro Kano, after years of careful study of Jiu-Jitsu and contemptuous thoughts, founded his own school, which he called KODOKAN-JUDO. The aim of Judo is to have a choice, when the defence is successful, whether to injure the attacker, or to just gain control over them and explain the vanity of their actions.
On the second of March, you will have the opportunity to witness a women’s Judo competition. Six women will represent the Czech Republic in the European Cup. Come to support them and witness this “gentle” combat.
Arena Sparta Podvinný Mill
The multifunctional building is suitable for various cultural, sport and social events. Apart from the large hall, the Arena offers other small halls, a restaurant, lounges and facilities. Outside the Arena, there is a parking lot and a sports ground, which can also be rented out.
