4+4 Days in Motion to Present Documentary Theatre Performance and More

Prague, Aug. 25th, 2008 - Still committed to courageous programming choices and engaging projects, the 4+4 Days in Motion festival returns in a new autumn timeslot. This edition features twenty performances, concerts and a specialist symposium in the Archa and Ponec Theatres as well as the Holešovice district post-industrial spaces of La Fabrika and Hala ALTA 30, from October 3rd to October 10th. “We were unable to stage the festival as usual in the spring, due to the delays with cultural grant payments. But I am delighted that we were able to reschedule all esteemed artists for this different, autumn festival time“, says Pavel Štorek, artistic director of 4+4 Days in Motion.

Featured companies include the BERLIN company of Belgium and the British-German group GOB SQUAD. October 8th and 9th in the Archa Theatre the Belgians will perform their project Bonanza, based in a style of performance known as documentary theatre. Audiences will enjoy an almost cinematic collage about the residents of a devastated Rocky Mountain town in the US. “This performance was the highlight of the 2007 Informal European Theatre Meeting in Gent“, explains Pavel Štorek. GOB SQUAD heads the other stream of festival programming – multimedia projects and visual interpretation of current events. The highly renowned group took inspiration for this piece from both the works of Andy Warhol and international pop art. For the complete festival program and more information please go to www.ctyridny.cz. Tickets go on sale September 10th.

Every year the festival finds unusual ways to draw attention to the use of Prague architectural spaces, industrial buildings and grounds by turning them into multifunctional spaces custom-built for contemporary art. The revitalization of non-traditional space through performance has always been a characteristic – and indeed the guiding principle – of the festival. Just some of the spaces used in recent years include the former sewage treatment plant in Bubeneč, the abandoned factory space of CKD Karlín, the old brickworks in the Šárka valley, the HC Hvězda ice hockey rink and last year, the Agricultural Museum.

In sync with the festival’s mission there will be a two-day international theatre and architecture symposium entitled “Art in Experimental, Industrial and Non-traditional Spaces“. This will take place on October 9th and 10th in the ALTA HALA 30 and 23 former factory spaces in the Holešovice district.

Programming of this, the thirteenth edition of the annual festival focuses above all on European companies that use documentary theatre techniques and the visual interpretation of current events. The festival will also feature multimedia performances and projects that interact with audiences. The line-up includes, in addition to performers and companies already mentioned: IVANA MŰLLER (Germany/Netherlands), MARTINE PISANI (France), AYDIN TEKER (Turkey), MAJA DELAK, MLADINSKO THEATRE and JANEŽ JANSA (Slovenia), and also CONSERVAS (Spain).

Also as part of the festival we present the premiere by Czech luminary choreographer PETRA HAUEROVÁ (Sazka award-winner). Audiences really have something to look forward to in her extraordinary multimedia performance experiment with lasers, sound and light effects.

Another part of the festival will be the site-specific project KORZÁRt, taking place in Holešovice district industrial spaces. Both Czech and international artists (from the world of theatre, music, visual arts, film) will collaborate on this project, including the HOME theatre group, ŽAN LOOSE, IRINA MUELLER (Germany) and ZOJA SMUTNY (Canada).

Performances for which there is high demand are scheduled to perform several times. This will allow audiences to choose which performances to see without having to worry about travel distance between different performance spaces. Programming allows audiences to see all performances.
