Impressionists on the movie screen
On the 31st of August, you can discover the works and the secrets of the French Impressionists in the Světozor Cinema in Prague, as part of the Bio Senior project.
The term Impressionism was inspired by Claude Monet’s painting ‘Impression, Sunrise’ (French: ‘Impression, soleil levant’), which was introduced to the public in the year 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition in Paris. This term was first used, as an insult, by the critic Louis Leroy, who considered the ‘blurred’ the image unfinished. The later success of the Impressionism ended traditional academic art and started the development of modern art.
Artists and exhibition
‘Secret Impressionists’ by the Italian director Daniele Pini is a documentary which recounts the impressionist revolution and all the paintings exhibited in an exhibition of the same name, which takes place at the newly inaugurated Palazzo Bonaparte. The film introduces paintings by artists such as Manet, Monet, Cézanne, Sisley, and Signac, which are parts of private collections, and which were hitherto inaccessible to the public. The documentary also introduces works of the lesser-known artists of the Impressionist movement.
