The guitarist Enver İzmaylov will perform at the Jazz club ‘U Staré paní’
As part of the Jazz Meets World Festival, Enver İzmaylov, master guitar player, will perform on the 26th of February 2019 in the club 'U Staré paní'. İzmaylov is renowned for his unique playing technique and instrument tuning. He is of Tartar origin and was born in 1955 in Fergana, in the former Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, to a Crimean-Tatar family. His family was deported to Uzbekistan from Crimea, where the guitarist returned in 1989.
Stellar career
He originally studied the bassoon and graduated in 1973, but he has played guitar since childhood. For eight years he was a member of a band called Sato, and his music was featured on the albums ‘Efsane’ (1986) and ‘Give Your Love for a Friend in a Circle’ (1987). In 1995, he won the European International Guitar Competition in Lausanne, Switzerland. In the same year, the Ukrainian Music Critics named him a ‘Musician of the Year’. Most of his releases are solo albums, but he has also worked with artists including French keyboardist Xavier Garcia, Turkish drummer Burhan Ocal and British saxophonist Geoff Warren. In Crimea, İzmaylov founded Art Trio of Crimea with percussionist Rustem Bari and Narket Ramazanov on clarinet, saxophone and flute.
An artist with a unique technique, influenced by traditional music
İzmaylov became famous for his incomparable technique of playing and instrument tuning. He plays his guitar, tailor made in Kiev, by tapping its neck with his fingers, like a keyboard. American jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan uses a similar technique.
The guitarist combines Crimean Tartar traditional music, Turkish, Uzbek, Balkan, classical music and jazz. In addition to instrumental music, he also excels in overtone singing.
Connecting jazz and world music
Enver İzmaylov has performed in Ukraine, Russia, Estonia, Moldova, Bulgaria, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Turkey and the USA. In Prague, he will play for the first time, during the festival Jazz Meets World, which connects jazz and world music.
The festival takes place with the support of Unijazz, an organization that follows in the footsteps of the former ‘Jazzová sekce’ (Jazz Section), which brings together music lovers of all genres, as much as possible, in contexts and relation to other cultural areas.
